Inside and out, this and that, keeping on keeping on, still!

 Hello.

I really am loathe to start with my usual how are you all doing opener. Things are detreriorating with the pandemic in many places just now which is very sad indeed; we really have gone back many steps. I continue to feel very guilty about not wanting to go out more than necessary, yet want the boys to get their education in school as I think that is so important - I can't do a good enough job with the home schooling. I've been shopping and stocked up, sensibly, on top of the shopping trip I made last week so hope to not need going again for a couple of weeks at least apart from fresh fruit an veg if needed until the garden get going with autumn growing.🤞 We're going back a little to how we cooked, baked and ate in the early days of lockdown so I feel this will start to make me feel a little more comfortable. I hope with the nights drawing in that people MAY beginto stay in more and help with slowing the spread of infection but who knows. 

I continue to say we're doing our own thing andTracy at Our Smallholding Adventure talks about here in her latest post, what we are dealing with right now IS right now, normal for the foreseeble and we just have to deal with it - keep on keeping on.

Anyway, here's me cheering myself up with inside and out of my little patch of paradise. 

If you read my last post the week was set to end with some really warm days and it did, however this weekend there was a distinct change. We'd already lit the wood burner on Friday night...

 and on Saturday morning with this lovely ice pattern on the bathroom Velux window.

the decision was made to light the Rayburn; yes, the old girl was fired up!

I feel sooo cosy just looking at this photo and as I type this my back is lovely and warm! We cooked our chicken Sunday roast in and on it yesterday and I'm looking forward to start baking bread and goodies for the tin.

The woodpile has been ready for this moment for a good few weeks now, even having a third extension plus roof so the Welsh rain doesn't ruin Jon and the boys' stacking efforts, so we're good to go for a lovely warm Winter indoors.

On Saturday afternoon the temperature in the poly tunnel was a surprising 32 degrees but I started work on something Jon and I had talked about; just a little project outside in the garden. The sink outside the poly house was cleared and will have new compost added and the sage, thyme and oregano are now housed in one of the tall planters on the garden side of the veg patch.

We plan on putting herbs in all the three planters so I'll need to check which herbs like living together. I know there three are happy house mates but will have to do a little homework reseach - just may ask the lovely Sara at Hawkwell Herbs for some advice.

I'm planning on growing flowers in the sink and toilet so have to move the two mint plants, replace that compost and get my bumbs organised - I would love to have some cutting flowers.

Also around the garden my multi-sown leeks seem to be coming along very nicely so fingers crossed we can have those on Christmas Day - unlike my second cropping spuds as blight has done for them I'm afraid.

  

Looking around I spotted these strawberries in some  planters I've left outside for some time. 

Still seem to be fruiting and just today I saw these others in the poly tunnel. They are some of  the runners I've planted - obviously one pot had some seeds in it already which I didn't realise!

My tomatoes are just about coming to an end. They are finally ripenening and read somewhere that laying the plants down can help with the process so giving that a go.

We haven't had anywhere near as many tomatoes as we would have liked but what we have had have been much better quality than in the past so maybe I'm getting there, finally!

I'm so pleased that the runner beans are really flowering now but not sure when I might get any pods.

I'm really please that the first lettuces I sowed and planted are doing very well so hope for the same with the ones planted later.

Earlier this morning I took a llittle walk a few minutes from the house and picked a couple of things to go with the crysanthymums and gourds I bought yesterday. A taste of Autumn in the kitchen so brighten my days.

Weekend Work? No, Homestead Harmony!

Hi!

This weekend we had some fantastic weather so we made the best of it with us all doing our bit where we could.

Yesterday I had an early jaunt to Aber to take Harry into Aber as he was boating with the cadets. I came home and as we had Airbnb guests due in the afternoon I made sure the room was ready. We had to head back into town to run a few errands, pick up Harry and grab a quick bite to eat.

Once home Jon and Harry went down to the field for logs and they split and stacked more wood to add to our supply for next winter. Funny, on our little homestead as with lots of other people, in Winter we prepare for Summer and in Summer we prepare for Winter. Alf and Harry were helping today.

Alf and I headed to the poly house.things are looking great in there at the moment. 

We set about potting on the last two sunflowers Pacino and a few courgettes Tondo di Piacenza. 

We also sowed butternut squash Butterbush - I'm growing this smaller variety in one of the big tyres this year and it also stores well - and Alf filled up water bottles and watering cans. A few more kale seeds were added to the small bed outside where it IS showing signs of life from the first sowing.

We had a bigger job as we needed to lay membrane in the bottom of the third veg bed, I think I've shown this image before so sorry for that. Then we spread out the compost which had been in the now removed raised beds; this didn't take too long then I also put a barrow full of my own compost - always very satisfying to make and use your own goodness; the bed does need a bit more to fill it completely. 

Quite a satisfying job. I think the first thing I'm going to put in there at one end are the second lot of Meteor peas I've sown and have growing in a drainpipe in the poly house. 

Talking of the peas, look, I have pods! 

This is very exciting as I checked my diaries and I sowed these on October 22 lasy year and successfully overwintered them in the greenhouse; they were then planted in the poly house on January 17. 

Today with a little help from Alf I've planted my 2nd early spuds, Charlottes.

These are in bed 2 which is in the far right corner of my little patch of paradise.

Jon came back from the field after chopping some of the trees to get the trailer and said I needed to go with; I took these photos of just at the gate where he has taken down the trees. 

The stream is to the left of the gate....

and this is the view with the gate behind you and the field itself is a few minutes walk down this way and spreads out at the bottom.

My last job of the day was to level out the main veg patch using some of my compost; its matured nicely....

and the beds are all looking great ready for the fun and games of the coming season. 

I'm so very excited about getting them full of edibles!

Sunset, Snug and Sunflowers.

Good morning. I'd sat down to finish this post when Jon arrived back from the saw mill with logs for the Winter woodpile so we have spent half an hour stacking those. Very satisfying.

My little patch of paradise is great right now; this was the sun setting over it the other night. Aaaahh, I soooo love where we live, we are very lucky and must always remember that.

I'm getting fairly regular harvests of things, not truck loads but with the second early spuds Alf and I took up a bit over 5lb from two plants the other day which is fab, but wait 'till the maincrop spuds come in!!

Some are already in flower and I'll be making sure my hessian sacks are clean and ready for storing them in the cellar. Very excited as I love the idea of having our own spuds in the cellar for whenever we want them for the next few months, fingers crossed.

The harvests are enough for me to be proud of and, again, I've really learnt lots this year ready for when I begin planning for next year, and boy do I like to plan.

Things I still have coming through are climbing peas; not sure what the harvest on those will be but I'm giving them a last go.

Talking of spuds, my second cropping ones for Christmas were planted out on the first days of this month and are already showing proper signs of life. I'll keep a really good eye on them in case of blight....

I ordered 2kg of tubers and this proved just a few too many for the containers/grow bags I have so I've given a few away to neighbours but still managed to plant about 17! Nom nom.

In the poly house I have some things growing away nicely; red and green lettuce in the drainpipe..

and I've rather nervously decided to start off some spring Cabbage. It is looking ok just now and it'll need potting on this weekend. I've decided they will be planted out in some of the now empty tyres as I feel I will be able to look after them easily over winter. I hope to be able to keep anything from eating these ones!

I have this and another large cucumber out front to sell as I have plenty coming and need to make sure I have two for the local show at the beginning of September. You really don't have to wait too long for them to get this big, just a bit of patience; these are Marketmore. I sold two at the front door yesterday, too!

The kale is doing ok but not as well as I had hoped; I've it covered over with netting now, perhaps a little late, but this is also protecting some beetroot. Another lesson.

In the greenhouse are my four pepper plants and they have teeny, tiny fruit on so I think I'll move those into the poly house for some extra heat and help.

The tomato plants are still not heavy with fruit but it is coming. I've invested in some good quality feed and hope this will help. 

I've moved two of the plants outside to see if that makes a difference; I covered these over as I was nervous about birds getting them, and still am!

Alongside these two plants are my beautiful sunflowers.

These multi-head flowers are bloomin' gorgeous I think.

Now we have been working on a project that will be added to our Airbnb listings.

This is the summer house we have been giving a revamp for guests, and us, to enjoy.

We have the two comfy chairs, a small table with a little cloth and a fabulous storm lantern with a candle, not LED.

On a small side shelf we have provided dominoes and postcards for people to send....

along with a radio, a drawing game and a couple of books.

We thought it would be fun to provide binoculars for bird watching, along with my old bird book from school, or for stargazing on a clear night.

We plan on getting a couple of throws for the chairs but right now it is quite warm in there. We really do hope our Airbnb guests will enjoy using it - the room has been ridiculously busy this month with hardly a vacancy which is FAB U LARSE! This is the view from The Snug up the garden which we hope they will also enjoy.

I've done some baking, apple turnovers yesterday with some of my bottled apples

and have dried sage I'd cut back. I love having fresh herbs in the garden and the house.

Harry is back from cadet camp so we are a complete unit again. Whilst he was away Alfie has been a star as I was unwell for a couple of days and he cleaned out my car, moved some things into the shed for Jon and went to the sheep market with our neighbour - properly earned his pocket money and then some. Harry is going to have to keep up!!

Today we may be taking a little trip out to collect a piece of furniture we have won on a well know auction site to go in the next Airbnb room. We are waiting delivery of beds that can be twin or a double to maximise business and then I have shopping to do for bedding and all the twidly bits, love that part of it, so Charlies in Aber look out because I'm a coming!

Right better crack on with something.
