Our Jakey-chops.

Today may be the last day that Jake is our dog. I have told a couple of people that we have, with heavy hearts, made the decision to find a new home for him.

Over the last six months or so he has developed attachment issues with Jon and has panic attacks as soon as it looks like Jon is leaving the house. In the day he g outdoors and lies on the floor by the gate waiting for Jon to come home. He comes round but on top of that he is totally unable to deal with the boys - you cannot tell a 9 and 10 year old to always be quiet because they are upsetting the dog; because of this he doesn't even like going on a walk when they come and as soon as they enter the room he leaves.

For the sake of Jake's mental health we think this is the best thing. Border Collies can be highly strung and temperamental but Jake's situation is not something that we feel can be trained out of him, he needs to have a life somewhere that he will be molly coddled and spoilt.

We have found a lady and her husband in Crewe who sound fantastic. It so happens we are going to visit my father in law in Nantwich tomorrow so we can take him for a house visit.
The people in Crewe have 4 acres, the lady is retired and will spend all her time with him. It goes without saying that if for any reason we do not like their situation them we will bring him home with us.

Jon is going to take Jake for the visit as we don't want the boys to get upset when they have realised what is going to happen. I truly just want him to go to people who can love him for what he is which is a bit softy and I think I would find it hard to say goodbye to him.

So I am collecting up his things to take with us incase he does leave us tomorrow. This is a sad thing that we have to do but it is the best decision.

  1. I came straight on when I knew you'd posted this. What a selfless act, well done to you all and I hope the boys keep smiling - they will be fine I am sure. It takes a lot of strength to do the right thing for someone/something else when it hurts you to do so. Lots of love x

  2. Thanks chic.xx Jon and I have discussed it a lot and truly believe it is the best thing for him. I just hope his new owner has lots of cheese in the fridge and is ready for rubbing his bum and tickling his tummy a lot!

  6. What a shame you have to do this, but you are doing exactly the right thing, it must be awful to see him so stressed all the time. I hope he is happy in his new home x

  7. Hello Lou, new here (you know how it is, follow a link, and then another, and then whoosh, down an interesting rabbit hole).

Must echo the comment from Tracy - how utterly selfless and brave of you. I don't know Jakey's history but you clearly are putting his interests first. If only everyone was so considerate. hugs to you all, must have been extremely difficult. 🐾 🐶

  8. Louise, we thought you would like to know that Jake is now living with us in Harpenden Hertfordshire. We found your blog via Google as we had your name on Jake’s vet record card.
It seems that for some reason Denise felt unable to keep Jake but was very upset that she had to let him go. We heard about him via our daughter’s mother in law who met Denise while out dog walking in Malvern. We had been looking for another dog as we had to have our dog Jack, also a Border Collie, put to sleep at the age of 15.
Jake has been with us for just over 4 weeks and is settling in very well. He really is a lovely boy and enjoys his 3 walks a day. We have 2 commons, a big park and many country walks nearby so plenty of opportunities for being off the lead. He is very affectionate and having lots of cuddles. We are both around during the day so he has company most of the time. We can’t believe how lucky we are to have found him, he is our perfect dog.
We would be quite happy to keep in touch to let you know how he’s getting on if you would like that.

    1. I hope you receive my reply but will try and reach you through Google+ too, not very good with that! Hello Sue and Selwyn. It was so lovely to hear from you about Jake now being very happy with you both. Jon and I are sorry that Denise was unable to keep Jake and had asked her to let us know if things didn't work out with her. However we are so very pleased he has found the perfect home and you have found the perfect dog after sadly losing Jack. We were sad to let Jake go but he was just not getting on with our boys and we didn't feel it was fair on him when he was so unhappy. It has cheered us up to hear from you and we have wondered how he was getting on since he left us. I think we are content in knowing he is happy with you both and regularly having cuddles and his belly rubbed! Thank you for contacting me.
