Grow Your Own - What To Do First?

Have you ever wanted to do or try something new to you soooo keenly but just don't know where to start? I sat at lunch time with a number of books and the internet trying to decide where to start with the idea lots of people have and that is to Grow Your Own.

I have decided to use the very warm conservatory we have to start some seeds and plants off until we get the greenhouse sorted, which I hope will be by the end of the month. I just want to do something!

I suppose what this post is is a veiled attempt to ask for the most basic of advice regarding the things I can do now. I know some of the things we want to grow ie. tomatoes, courgettes (though not too many!), some herbs, sweet peppers, potatoes and onions. We won't have our raised beds either until the greenhouse is set up so don't have the opportunity to grow things outside just now.

I also wanted to ask if I can just keep growing things in the greenhouse because of not having places to plant them out just now.

So much to think about and I just want to get started and do something right so I can say I grew that! I'll try a lot of different things when I'm baking new yummy things but I just don't know where to start with this! Help?

  1. Tomato, Pepper, Cucumber, Chilli, Courgette, etc will all be fine growing in big pots.I will be putting lettuce and radish in deep grow sacks even the beetroot is in one, I will mostly be growing salad veg now x

  2. There is a lot you can do, Potaoes you can grow in compost bags or feed sack, ask a local farmer for some feed sacks they will happily let you have some, you could also grow courgettes and beans in them, tomatoes chilies peppers cucumbers once you have them started indoors just grow them on in greenhouse when you are ready, a strip of guttering you could grow some lettuce easily, if you can get hold of tyres again ask at some farms they make great growing containers you could use them for beetroot carrots onions, have fun with whatever you do a greenhouse is not essential for growing your own :-)

  3. Thanks so much to both of you for your advice. I'll see if the farmer Jon knows from the saw mill has any feed sacks. I need to get some seeds and potatoes for chitting next week as I don't think I'll have time this weekend.x

  4. ooh, I've just been having a lovely catch up. Sorry for not being here sooner. I added you to my blog reads list on my private blog (I keep it just for me!) , but it doesn't update and looks like you haven't been posting. A lame excuse, but it's true.

I love growing veggies from seed, it's so satisfying. We have a greenhouse and keep things in there for as long as possible really, or at least until the ground heats up a bit.
You can grow herbs in pots on a windowsill, and actually, I start things like pumpkins and squashes on windowsills so I can baby them and wait until the second leaves arrive, then pot them on. We grow spuds in bags. They do really well in large bags and it's easy to rootle them out when ready. Such fun to delve in and dig for gold!
I suppose my only advice is just go for it. In my eyes there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way of growing. Everything wants to live so the chances are you'll have a glorious glut of goodies to pick when summer arrives. x

    1. Hi Sadie. Thanks for all of that. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and as you say I'm sure I'll get something out of it all! Re the update of my blog, I sent my own email to it the other day to test it and I got an email back, took a while but are you saying it never updates. Maybe you need to re-subscribe as I had two blogs roughly of the same name when I moved so I had to delete an incorrectly named one. Thanks for bothering to catch up any way and isn't the box just a little darling?!xx
